Derek

Damn.

My emotions floated sky high as I stood at the toilet, letting out the longest piss of my life. Sex with Ali electrified me. My mind had trouble wrapping itself around what had happened.

I wet a paper towel and gave my cock a good wipe down. I’m not a neat freak but I didn’t need to leave with unnecessary fluids and smells drying on me.

While washing my hands, I glanced in the mirror and my head jerked when I spotted something amiss on the back wall. Up in the corner, I noticed someone had capped the pipe going to the sprinkler system.

That’s fucked up. What else is wrong in this place?

I mentally put on my fire chief hat and walked back to the dark hallway. The alley door lacked a well-lit exit sign above it.

When I re-entered the kitchen, Ali flashed me a big smile. “Hey, there,” she said.

My face remained stoic and didn’t return the smile.

“Derek, what’s wrong?” Ali’s demeanor turned south.

“How long have you rented this place?”

“Since last fall,” Ali said.

“Has the fire marshal been out here yet?” I asked.

“No. I’d know, because I’ve been here every day since I opened. Why?” Ali asked as she began to put her clothes back on.

“Where’s the fire alarm?” I asked.

“On the other side of the refrigerator on the back wall,” Ali pointed.

I located the switch and pulled. Nothing. I checked the circuit breaker in the wall and sure enough, it had been tripped.

“Derek, what’s going on?” Ali’s gorgeous hair was a mess and her cheeks still glowed.

“You’ve been operating without working sprinklers or fire alarm. Plus, the exits don’t have clearly marked, well-lit signs above them.”

“I had no idea,” Ali said. “I assumed the landlord took care of everything.”

“The fire alarm issue could be the fault of wiring. That could spark a fire.”

“Oh, my,” Ali said.

“Your safety and those who enter this building is at risk. I have no choice but to have the fire marshal come out here tomorrow. Citations will be issued and you’ll have to shut down until the issues get fixed.”

“I can’t afford that.”

“The landlord will be on the hook for it,” I said.

“I don’t want to lose the money for being closed. Can’t I have someone come look when I’m closed on Sunday?”

“No, I can’t in good conscious let you or anyone else work in this space until the safety is addressed.”

“Well, aren’t you the lady boner killer right now?” Ali put her hand on her hip.

“Ali, don’t get upset at me. I’m doing my job.” I felt like a dick but it had to be done.

“All right,” Ali said with an acid tongue, waving her arm forward toward the exit. “We should leave now.”

Awkward silence filled the air between us as Ali locked the front door. The street sat empty and dark. The neighborhood was safe enough, I didn’t worry about her closing up after sunset.

I gripped Ali’s shoulder. “Ali, don’t open this shop in the morning. I’ll use my influence to get the marshal here as soon as possible.
